Maria( Smutko )Olgyay, age 90 of Winooski, passed away on Sept 10, 2018.
She was born to the late Maria and George Smutko on March 25, 1928. Maria grew up in Hungary with her 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Her family escaped Hungary during the Russian Occupation in 1948 and lived in Germany before immigrating to the United Sates in 1952. She married the love of her life, George Olgyay on June 29, 1957 and was married for 53 years until his passing in 2010.
She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed managing the Four Winds Gallery for many years. The Gallery is where she developed her love of art. She enjoyed meeting the local artists and was curator of exhibits for them.
Maria is predeceased by her brothers, John, Bill and Leslie Smutko. Survivors include her sisters Violet Kovach, Kathy Sharpe and her brother Alex Smutko. She is also survived by her children, Emese (Michael) Madigan, Zoltan (Jill) Olgyay, Maria (Ken) Hobson, also her beloved grandchildren, Patrick Madigan, Cassidy Olgyay, Kenny Hobson, and Tyler Hobson along with many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Stephen's in WInooski on Friday Sept.21 at 11:00am. The family wishes to thank Bea, Rachel, the VNA, their volunteers and St Mike's Rescue for their help and kindness to Maria.
