Obituary for Louann Farnham

On Thursday, October 27, Louann Elaine Farnham 74, loving mother, and grandmother,
passed away after a courageous, five-year battle with cancer. Born to Wendell “Pete” Farnham
and Olga Leatherman Farnham, Louann graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology
where she was a standout designer and earned a degree in textile design.
After college she returned home to Vermont where she met her husband Richard Brown
recently back from Vietnam. Their son John Brown was born in July of 1972. She was divorced a
couple years after John was born which is when she took on the role that she was born to play:
“Single Mom.” She raised her son by herself and gave him the best possible childhood any child
could ask for.
Although she was an immensely talented seamstress and fashion designer, Vermont in the
late ‘70s was not the place to be discovered by one of the fashion houses. This led her to a long
career with UPS, where she became an asset to the organization and built many longstanding
customer relationships that elevated UPS’ customer service – first in Vermont, then
Massachusetts, and later in New Hampshire.
When she retired, Louann moved back to Vermont where she found herself in her best role
yet -- Grandma. There was nothing she loved more than spending time with her grandchildren,
Benjamin and Madison. To say that she was involved would be a gross understatement. For
every soccer game or Karate competition she missed as a single mom, she was present and
engaged with her grandchildren.
Louann is survived by her loving son John Brown, 50, of Jericho, Vermont, and his two
children Benjamin Brown, 17 and Madison Brown, 13. She also leaves an older sister Carole
Jacobs, Alexandria, Virginia and a younger sister Jane Farnham in Burlington, Vermont. She is
preceded in death by her parents, Pete Farnham and Olga Leatherman.
A celebration of life will be held in 2023 at a location she loved to visit in the spring each year.
