Obituary for Richard William Homan

Richard Homan, age 51, of So. Burlington, VT, after a brief illness passed away on Dec 26, 2021. Richard (Rick/Ryk/Ho) was born in Worcester, MA on April 21, 1970 to Frederick C. and Mary E. Homan of North Grafton, MA.

Rick graduated from St John's High School, Shrewsbury, MA, where he was very active in theatre and performance, garnering many awards. He was a founding member of the 1017 Comedy Troupe in 1985 and remained lifelong friends with the other founding members.

Ryk went on to pursue a degree in Fine Arts/Drama at St. Michael's College in Colchester, VT, developing his skills as an actor and playwright. It was there he met many more folks with whom he would form lifetime bonds, among them his future ex-wife, Bridget Edwards.

Rick and Bridget moved to New York City in 1993 and were married in 1995. Rick wrote, produced and performed in many plays (his own and others), and delighted audiences as one half of the musical-comedy duo Fish & Chips, with fellow 1017 member, Mike Birch. Ho made a living in those days as a Kelly girl and an off-Broadway stagehand. The couple returned to Vermont in the late 90s and began their family, becoming parents to Finn in 1998 and Emmett in 2002.

Rick has worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield Vermont as a data analyst for the past decade. He continued to write and perform in both Vermont and New York City. You may have seen him in such roles as Don Pedro in Shelburne Players’ Much Ado About Nothing (2009), the Narrator in Dancing at Lughnasa at Champlain College (2016), or any number of Saints and Poets productions over the years.

Rick's creative spirit lives on in his sons, who embody their father's musicality, gentle goofiness, gifts with language, his rapier wit, and his flair for experimentation in the kitchen.

Rick is survived by his two beloved sons, Emmett S. Edwards and Finn C. Homan of Winooski, VT, his parents, Fred and Mym, brother Matthew Homan and family, of North Grafton, MA, and his devoted and loving partner, Donna Walter.

Presently a memorial service has been scheduled at St Michael's College's McCarthy Arts Center of January 15, 2022 at 2:30 pm. In light of the risks inherent in large indoor gathering, the family has decided to forego a reception following the memorial. Please arrange your own small gatherings to commemorate Rick safely.

Please refer to Rick's Facebook page for any changes due to extreme weather or expansion of Covid, which might result in changes. It is asked in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St Michael's College Scholarship funds (https://engage.smcvt.edu/give) in Rick's name.

His brother, Matthew, has written an obituary available on Rick's Facebook page which reflects Rick's sense of humor and wit. We encourage people to gather there and share and celebrate this unique guy.

Thanks, Ted!
