Obituary for Suzette Turmel (Gagnon)

Suzette Turmel, 85, of Winooski, Vermont, passed away February 27, 2023, at Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester, VT surrounded by her family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born in Lac Megantic, Canada, to Paul and Laurette Royer Gagnon on December 28, 1937. She grew up in Lac Megantic with her two brothers (Jean Yves, Gilles) and four sisters (Rejeanne, Solange, Denise, Louise). Her childhood was an idyllic time in her life, that she recalled fondly. She taught 3rd and 4th grade for 4 years. While she enjoyed teaching, she was always a seamstress at heart. What started as a hobby became her career. She took upmost pride in her work and was widely known in the community for her skills.
Suzette met the love of her life, Bernard Turmel through mutual acquaintances on his many visits to Canada. They were married August 25, 1962, and recently celebrated 60 blissful years of marriage. They had four children Michael, David, Diane, and Dennis. She was a devoted mother and grandmother to four wonderful grandchildren Steven, Ryan, Cole, and Renee. She was an integral part of her grandchildren’s life and showered them with love. She was very proud of her grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed their company.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bernard; children, Michael, David, and Diane Thornton (Jerry) of Winooski, VT, and Dennis Turmel (Julie Santos) of Glen Burnie, MD; grandchildren: Steven Turmel (Cecelia), Ryan Thornton, Cole Thornton, and Renee Thornton, her brother Gilles Gagnon (Carmelle), her sister Louise LeMay, her sister-in-law Marguerite Dezotell (Walter) and sister-in-law Henriette Turmel as well as many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was predeceased by her siblings: Rejeanne Vallee (Roger), Jean Yves Gagnon, Sister Solange Gagnon, Denise Gagnon and in-laws: Robert Turmel (Yolande), Lucien Turmel, and Jean-Marc Lemay.
She was a longtime member of St Francis Xavier Catholic Parish and St. Jean Baptiste.
Family and friends are welcome to attend visitation to be held at LaVigne Funeral Home on March 05, 2023, from 2:00-5:00 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on March 6, 2023 at 12:00 PM followed by a reception at the VFW in Winooski . She will be interred at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers please have Mass said or make donations to a charity of ones choice.
